Trunk Show Tips From Flower Patch Farmgirl

Shannan is the authentic, witty voice behind the popular blog Flower Patch Farmgirl. Not only is she a great writer, she is the wife of a jail chaplain and a mom to four kids—two adopted from South Korea and two adopted domestically. Two years ago her family moved from their dream farm on six acres to a little home in a forgotten part of the city to pursue a different kind of life. On her blog she features great DIY projects, honest looks at her crazy-but-full life, and thoughts on living intentionally within your community. Shannan is also a rockstar Noonday Hostess. She recently sat down with us to share some of her sure-fire tips for hosting a great Trunk Show.

Thanks for making time to talk with us, Shannan! First things first. How did you hear about Noonday?

I heard about Noonday years ago when Jessica Honegger sent me one of the early pieces. I still wear it often! I was drawn in right away by the soul behind Noonday. It was the perfect fit for a woman like me who wants to be part of something bigger than myself and also likes to wear cute things.

What made you want to host a Noonday Trunk Show?

I stood in line at the coffee shop next to a woman who was wearing Noonday and couldn’t help myself from chatting her up. Fast-forward a month or two and she was in my living room holding the attention of 20 of my closest friends. This Ambassador, Jolene Shrock, put a local face to the Noonday mission I’d grown to love. I was thrilled to introduce Noonday to my buds through Jolene. I’ve now hosted three Trunk Shows and love teaming up with her. She’s my friend to the end!

Tell us about your experience hosting a Trunk Show. What was your favorite part? What were you most surprised by?

We had such a good time! Our cozy—read: small—home was packed with so many of my favorite people. Jolene’s passion for the Artisans and her heart for orphans shined through as she shared about Noonday. She connected all of us with the purpose behind our purchases. It was a laid-back, noisy evening with fantastic food. What more could you ask for?

What would you tell others who are thinking about hosting a show?

Don’t hesitate! As much as Noonday is growing, there are so many people who don’t know about the work they’re doing. It’s so much fun to introduce people to this new way of shopping.

We love that women are opening their homes to host Trunk Shows in their communities! Do you have any hospitality tips for future Hostesses?

I’m a recovering perfectionist who entertains often. My best tip is to chronically run behind schedule. I tell myself that this sets a “relaxed” tone when guests arrive and I immediately give them a job to make them feel welcome. Entertain however you live. People want to see us being ordinary. Although, Noonday Trunk Shows are also a great time to roll out the chick food and the thrift-store china that doesn’t get used often enough.

Speaking of “chick food,” what are your favorite dishes to serve up to Trunk Show guests?

Always, always chips and salsa! And pie. I store-bought mine last time…winning! I also recommend cutting grapes in half, sautéing them in a little olive oil and thyme, and serving them on water crackers with goat cheese. Your friends will think you’re the Duchess of Cambridge.

Mmm, sounds delicious and fancy! Anything else you’d like to share?

Yes! How did you know? Dress like yourself for your party but go as neutral as possible. I wore a gray t-shirt with a solid cardigan…very casual, like always, but a bit more blank-canvas than usual. It made it so much easier to try on ALL of the jewelry and get a sense of what would work best with my duds.
