Here's to the #MenofNoonday! - Flourish by Noonday Collection

Here’s to the #MenofNoonday!

We talk a lot about women at Noonday, and that is because women rock! Yet even though we know women possess dignity, talent and immense worth, the basic human rights of women are still not honored in many countries around the world. As women begin to receive an education, become economic players in their communities, and grow into leaders in the marketplace, their story becomes one of power and worthiness.

But at Noonday, we think that men rock just as much as women! We love seeing what happens when men create spaces for flourishing in their families and communities. When we see them put down the bottle and use their hands for work, when we see them refuse to take an additional wife and instead save for their kids’ education, when we see men come home tired but ready to engage with their families – then we see families and communities able to be what they were truly created to be. This is what we call flourishing!

Uganda

From the first day we met in our baby 20’s, my man Joe desired for me to become the truest form of myself. We met during a week-long training before we moved overseas to work with an organization serving alongside the poor. We were randomly assigned kitchen duty together. I got caught up in watching some transformational story about Guatemala and arrived to kitchen duty late (this would become a long-standing pattern in our marriage). When I arrived, Joe had already gotten everything cleaned up (also a long-standing pattern).

“I wish you would have come and found me, ” I said.

He responded, “I just assumed you had something important to do.”

Joe Honegger

On our wedding day, he dangerously (with a dose of ignorance) promised to “do whatever he needed to do to see God’s purposes accomplished in my life.” Little did he know, this would mean investing what little dollars we had in a business, financially supporting our family while I worked and didn’t earn a salary with Noonday for a couple of years, taking care of our home and family while I travel to Asia, Africa and Latin America, cheering me on when things look scary, and dealing with a house filled to the brim with jewelry!

Jalia and Daniel

Last summer, I took Joe and our three kids to Uganda to visit our largest artisan partner and the heart of where Noonday all began. Jalia and Daniel, our first artisan partners, arranged a huge welcome and celebration with 200 Artisans, shaking it like only Africans can.

Jalia and I have often talked about how our husbands have pushed us forward into our callings and purposes. On the day we arrived in Uganda, Jalia told me, “I saw you walking through so many women celebrating you! They would dance their legs off at the sight of you. Joe was standing right behind you. Nobody knew him. He didn’t seek to be known. You were out there shining. And that’s what mattered to him. I recognized in that moment how selfless he is; ready to catch you when you fall. Jessica is the sparkle, but Joe is really the star! He just loves to see you shine. I have been to your house and I know how tired you get. And how he is always there for you, for the kids, tirelessly with no complaints at all.”

When a husband and father truly wants to see his wife and kids shine, that family will absolutely shine! Today, we celebrate the men who make it their aim for their wives and kids to shine. These are the #MenofNoonday.

Daniel, Jalia’s husband, is absolutely one of those men. In a country where about 90 percent of men are polygamous and many are unemployed, he is setting a new standard for his employees. In Jalia’s words, “he seeks no praises. His goal is to make my dreams come true. When I am out there sparkling, that’s his joy. I wish all the people knew him the way I do! He always goes an extra mile to bathe the baby, read stories to the kids and massage my feet – the exact opposite of a typical African man.”

Bukenya

Bukenya is an Artisan who works with Jalia and Daniel. He is one of the men that Daniel has mentored. He once was homeless, but now has purchased a plot of land and is beginning to build his family home! His daughter now receives a great education and has a father who loves her more than anything. Caleb, Bukenya’s brother, is another man Daniel has mentored. Once a street kid, he is now a supervisor at their thriving business, teaching others how to improve and grow.

Sham

Sham, an artisan entrepreneur who works in India, is another one of the #MenofNoonday I have met on this journey. A few years ago, he was managing a small jewelry group that was swindled out of their money. He stood by that group and found a new investor. He then moved his wife and three daughters to work alongside the Artisans. Today he guides the group with gentleness and respect. He is creating a safe and loving environment for these women to work so that they are able to leave their homes for work – a true feat in India!

We could go on and on about the #MenofNoonday who support our Ambassador community! Laura Walton, our top seller in 2014, gushed about her husband from the stage when she was recognized last year at our Ambassador conference, Shine:

“My husband should be up here with me. He has watched the kids countless nights, entered orders for me, hauled displays in and out of the car for me night after night.”

Laura Walton

This is the story of so many #MenofNoonday! These men aren’t afraid to let their wives shine: to throw together a little mac n’ cheese, grab bags of ice on the way home and then get kicked out for a Trunk Show, to kiss his wife good-bye the moment he walks in the door while simultaneously lugging trunks of jewelry to the car. These are the men who can’t wait for their wives to head out to see the world and meet the Artisans they partner with (over 60 Ambassadors are traveling to Guatemala, Rwanda, and Ecuador this summer!). These are the men who shine the light on their wives’ successes. These are the men who want their kids to know a world beyond soccer practice and summer camp. These are the #MenofNoonday.

Daniel

Today, we salute them! Men, we honor your sacrifices. We may not be able to adorn you in Noonday (yet), but we hope you know that every time your wife opens her home, makes a purchase, or leaves you to fend for yourself one more night as she heads to a Trunk Show, that you are partnering with us to build a flourishing world, and you are setting an example for men around the world.

(And to my Joe – who could really care less about this public recognition and who only follows @jessicahonegger and @noondaycollection on Instagram, thank you. You really are the star to my sparkle.)

Are you married to or supported by one of the #MenofNoonday? Let me know below how he makes you sparkle!
