Hope and Impact: The Heart Behind our Storyline Collection
The name “Storyline Collection” is deep-rooted and meaningful because of the stories that each piece of jewelry represents. The Artisan Business that Noonday Collection partners with to create our Storyline Collection helps women in East Asia find freedom from exploitation. Your Storyline purchases help the Artisan Business provide counseling and rehabilitation services and dignified jobs that empower these women to support themselves and their families.
Each piece of jewelry represents the story of a woman who has experienced difficult circumstances, but has found hope and taken the chance to start a new life. Here are four stories of women whose stories have been re-written with freedom.
Wynne — Arrived Fall 2018
As a young woman, Wynne was trafficked into a brothel in East Asia, where she lived for years. When she met the outreach team from Noonday’s Artisan Business Partner, her eyes were opened to the danger of her current life, but for the first time in a long time, she also found hope.
The transition from Wynne’s prior situation to working with our Artisan Business Partner was not all smooth sailing. At first, Wynne hardly spoke to others, struggled to make jewelry, and felt purposeless. But through the team’s holistic approach and one-on-one mentoring, Wynne was provided with tools to reflect on her life, learn how to communicate, and learn new skills.
In the last year, Wynne says she has changed a lot. She can express herself, quickly produce jewelry, and has learned valuable business skills. Wynne shared, “Since coming to the workshop, I have gotten married and now have a baby boy. Today, I am so happy and feel that I have an extremely rich life!”
Loni — Arrived Spring 2019
Loni was working in the brothels without hope of a different life. Our Artisan Business Partner befriended her and offered her the chance to work as an Artisan, but Loni insisted that she was too old, too uneducated, and too unintelligent to do any other kind of work–surely spitting back the words she had heard her entire life. But with encouragement from our partner, Loni took the opportunity to start a new beginning and joined the team of Artisans.
Just a few days after she joined, Loni’s son was hospitalized with tuberculosis, and she needed to leave work to care for him. Our Partner was able to assure her that she was a valued member of the team, and that her job would still be waiting for her when she returned.
Fortunately, Loni’s son recovered within weeks and was able to return to school. Loni was unsure if she would return to work with our Artisan Business Partner, but she made a brave choice and decided not to go back to her old life. After all the roadblocks she faced, Loni had the courage to make a change and choose hope for a second time.
FeeFee — Spring 2019
FeeFee was hopeless and seemed lifeless when the community outreach teams from our Artisan Business Partner met her. She hardly spoke for nine months as the teams continued to meet with her, and she seemed uninterested when visiting their office. But then a change happened. FeeFee started calling every day during a holiday season until the holiday was over and the business began work again. She gained determination and hope and sought a life outside of the brothels in hopes of learning English and traveling with her mom.
Through joining our Artisan Partner’s holistic care program, FeeFee was able to receive English training, and she now has a dignified job. FeeFee, having overcome a life of hardship and loss, is now thriving.
Bay and Ling — Fall 2018
This past year, two sisters named Bay and Ling joined our Artisan Business Partner after community outreach teams met with them regularly for seven months in the brothel where they worked. On their first day in the workshop, they told the team, “Everyone here is so nice and goes out of their way to help us. We have never experienced this before. It is like it is everyone’s job to love us.”
A few weeks later, Bay shared that she has gained confidence in herself since coming to the Artisan Business Partner and she is able to do things she never thought she could. Today, Bay and Ling are both thriving and are taking a Microsoft Word class. They are a source of life and joy in the office.
