How a Dress can Change the World
Freedom. Dignity. Creativity. These three powerful words describe Dressember – and are some of the reasons why Noonday is honored to play a part in this movement.
What’s Dressember you ask?
Dressember is a collaborative movement leveraging fashion and creativity to restore dignity to all women. What began in 2009 as a quirky style challenge with a clever name quickly spread like wildfire, and today is responsible for bringing freedom to vulnerable people across the globe. Participants pledge to wear a dress every single day in December, with the goal of raising money to support organizations working to make a big impact.
More Than a Dress
Dressember is a month of wearing dresses, but it is so much more. At its core, Dressember is about advocating for the inherent dignity of all women. Women (and some brave men) rally their communities to support them with financial donations, and all funds raised support the work of International Justice Mission, which just so happens to be one of Noonday’s very favorite organizations. This year Dressember has grown to include funding A21’s work as well.
In its first year Dressember participants collectively raised $165,000, which went directly to IJM. Participation doubled last year and the funds raised nearly tripled! We have loved watching these numbers grow and can’t wait to see the impact this month brings.
We have been honored to participate in Dressember the last few years – from watching our Founder raise funds last year, to seeing Noonday’s Home Office staff get involved, and most exciting of all – seeing how Dressember has caught on in the Noonday Ambassador community.
Dressember + Noonday
This year 30+ Ambassadors organically formed a Dressember team of their own and are currently among the Top 10 Dressember Teams, having raised a total of $6,387 of their $15,000 goal! We couldn’t be more excited for them. When asked to describe their Dressember story the team said, “We are participating in Dressember because we believe in everyday advocacy. We know that our voices matter, and that we can help change the world that millions of abused women and girls wake up to every morning. We are Noonday Collection Ambassadors because of this very reason. Many Noonday Collection artisan business partners employ women who have been in abusive situations and/or are survivors of human trafficking, but now are being paid fair wages in safe working conditions creating beautiful jewelry and accessories.”
We have loved seeing the Dressember community flourish over the years and how this creative challenge is also fueling freedom across the globe. And of course – we can’t get enough of the seeing the participants adorning their dresses with Noonday! We especially love the new Dressember dress by Elegantees, a fellow fair trade fashion brand. Here are some of our favorites:
It’s not too late to make a difference this Dressember! Even if you don’t want to don a dress every day, you can support those who have taken the challenge by donating. Every dollar raised will bring us one step closer to a world of freedom, dignity, and justice for all. Won’t you join us?
