The Beauty of Collaborative Design

At Noonday, the launch of a new Collection brings with it lots of buzz and excitement, oohs and ahhs, and exclamations of “gotta have that”! But for our talented team of designers, the launch also represents the culmination of over a year of work to bring the collection to life. Our team begins the process of designing a new collection several seasons ahead of time, using trend forecasting to predict what styles, silhouettes, and colors will be the most desirable.

2017-Spring-Behind-The-Design10Then, they put together a packet of upcoming trend information and send it to our Artisan Partners across the globe, where their designers start imagining how they can interpret the latest styles utilizing the heirloom craft techniques and local materials they use to create Noonday’s designs. Our design team in Austin then begins getting down to the nitty-gritty, sketching out specific accessory designs and collaborating with our Partners to discover what’s possible. The Artisans craft samples of our team’s designs, and also include some original designs of their own. The back and forth process results in styles that feel on-trend while capturing the beauty of the local materials and crafts that make our styles so unique.

But our collaborative design process isn’t just about creating special styles–it’s also about sustainability. Around the world, talented Artisans with incredible skill are struggling to develop their businesses because they don’t have access to information about what the marketplace wants. We offer trend-forecasting and design assistance services that ensure our Partners can create styles that women in the US will love to purchase and wear. This collaborative process keeps Noonday’s customers coming back again and again, allowing us to continue to place orders with our Partners season after season.

Spring 2017 // Design Inspiration

By scoping out the season’s runway shows and doing extensive trend research, our designers curate overall looks and feels for each collection that reflect the trends people are loving. For spring, our designers organized the collection around two main trend themes: “The Artist” and “Urban Native”.

The Artist

This look combines modern, clean lines with a more classical romantic femininity. Inspired by the paintings of the French artist Toulouse-Lautrec and his depictions of ballerinas, this style story features classic pastels but with surprising pops of richer hues. Dainty bow-like details and intricate florals are themes that pop up again and again in this story. Hand-painted paper beads update a Noonday staple (the paper rope necklace from Uganda), giving it a fresh and feminine feel. And delicate charms and lace in classic golden hues add femininity to our favorite basic silhouettes.

Runway Inspiration

In pulling together this style story, our designers were inspired by shows from Marni, Lanvin, and Chloe, where blush and bright pink dominated the runway in new and fresh ways.

Urban Native

The other story that informed our designers as they created our Spring 2017 looks was the concept of “Urban Native” — a coming-together of refined style with more traditional elements for bold new looks. Cleanly stacked and proportioned patterns are found throughout this story, and rich geometric textures add visual interest. Natural elements also come into play, like cowrie shells, horn, and bone. A strong focus on tribal color blocking and beading pays tribute to the traditional techniques our Artisan Partners do so well. And of course, the tassel continues to be a strong design element (we hope it never goes away!), giving this story a strong boho feel.

Runway Inspiration

For this story, our designers drew inspiration from shows by Valentino and Alberta Feretti, both of whom featured natural materials mixed with refined metallics, bold, rich hues, and repeating patterns and geometric motifs.
