5 Tips for Cultivating a Purposeful Social Media Presence

Social Media gets a bad rep sometimes, but I find myself arguing on its behalf more often than not. Social media has become a way for me to tell stories, encourage others, and provide and receive recommendations for beautiful places and incredible people.

What has social media done for me?

It has empowered me

It has informed me

It has challenged me

It has taught me

It has made me more creative

It has given me more empathy

It has helped me share stories

It has helped me support Artisans around the world

When the day has been long and the tasks are piling up its nice to scroll through a feed filled with things I enjoy and people I admire. But, more than that, it is a place to engage, discover, and plan for more of the things that bring joy to my life {travel, brunch, connection, and hilarious videos}.

So, how can we each find the corners of the internet that bring goodness, the people who empower us, and the space to grow through this virtual world while living in the intensely real world? I’ve provided a few suggestions below, but I would love to know your ideas too! Comment below and let’s encourage each other, virtually 😉

5 Tips for Cultivating a Purposeful Social Media Presence

1. Engage with purpose

When you’re scrolling through your feed on any social channel, let yourself pause when something catches your eye, moves you, or makes you think. Then, tell the person. Comment why it caught your eye, message them and let them know how much you appreciate their honesty, repost and tag them if you think others should see it too. Engagement brings community and who doesn’t like compliments? Let’s be a purpose-filled, engaging world – adding light with a few clicks.

2. Share your heart for ________

What makes your heart flutter? What breaks it? What do you want to scream from a mountain top? What makes you want to hide away? Share THAT.

I am passionate about music, ethical fashion, travelling, raising awareness and funds for anti-slavery causes and people feeling known and loved. So, I share about those things.  I planned my entire trip to Paris through Instagram saves. I’ve met new friends who share similar passions through my phone. I have helped raise thousands of dollars for organizations I believe in simply from sharing on social media. Share your heart and create content that brings YOU joy + follow people who do the same.

3. Give recommendations

As I shared above, I planned my entire trip to Paris around social media, saving pages and links and asking Insta friends for personal recommendations. Then, I promptly shared some of those same sites + some new ones on my stories, saving them to my highlights, so anyone can view my trip and save recommendations for themselves.

I also find myself sharing new music, beloved brands, and Nashville favorites quite often, because if I love it, surely someone else will too.

4. Share tips

What do you do well? What are you most drawn to sharing? What do you wish people knew? Share those things!

For me, it’s styling outfits and finding timeless pieces to express yourself through clothing and accessories. I am enamored by ethical brands making their mark on the fashion industry through fair wages, beautiful pieces, and story-focused marketing. I’m also passionate about shopping second-hand and proving there is fashion in a piece new to you but vintage to the world. I find myself sharing outfit inspiration, layering basics, balancing patterns, and ethical pieces to implore my followers to shop their closet and try a new style to express their confidence or, maybe, even boost it a bit.

5. Create and share beautiful content

So you have some ideas of what to share and how to engage, but now what? First and foremost, natural light is your friend. Whether you want to go LIVE about your new venture, share a quick snippet of your day on your Instastory, or post a new outfit via selfie or flat lay, near a window with natural light somewhere close by is ideal. Second, grab some apps that help you plan, edit, and share! I love to use Afterlight for photo editing (brightening, sharpening, adding a glow), PLANN to plan posts for later (or at least keep my photos all in one place), and Unfold to create clean stories with an eye-catching layout. Lastly, use hashtags to find and be found (think: city (#nashville, #paris), content shared (#ethicalfashion, #nashvillebrunch, #secondhandfirst), or ideas presented (#makeadifference, #worldchanger, #selfcare).

Sometimes I wonder what would I be, what would I be able to do, what good would have not been done had social media not existed. Then, sometimes, I wonder where my time goes and why consumerism sometimes rears its ugly head. Social media isn’t a perfect platform and we aren’t perfect people… but I feel it can and should be used in such a way that when we look around in our virtual world and see the result of empowering posts, collective hope, and intense passion, changing the world for the better…or at least adding a little light to it.
