An Adoptive Mom on Mother’s Day

How I became a Noonday Ambassador has a whole lot to do with Mother’s Day. In fact, if I wasn’t a mother, I don’t think I’d be hustling like this to bring fair trade, Artisan-made beauty to my community.

This Mother’s Day will be the 14th I’ve celebrated as a mom. I’ve never really loved this holiday much and have seen it as Hallmark’s way of making a buck with card sales and sentimental gifts. Don’t get me wrong – I’ve enjoyed having a day to be celebrated and to think more intentionally about my own mom, my mother-in-law, and my children. It was just that it was never that important to me.

But Mother’s Day permanently changed for me when I became a mother for the fourth time – because that is when I first became a mother through adoption. Being a mother to a child someone else carried and birthed is no small thing. There are big emotions, heavy hearts, and so much joy/pain. And I believe there is no way around it – if you are a problem solver, adoption will create a need in you to try to make sure no mother is ever faced with placing her child for adoption again.

I would, without question, give the last penny in my bank account and the last breath in my lungs for all six of my babies. But with my adopted children, my need to give extends beyond their little lives. It extends to all the babies of all the mothers who feel they have no option but to give their child up. Because how can I say I love my adopted children – whom other mothers carried and placed with me – without also trying to prevent this scenario from happening over and over again? How can I accept that mothers who did not have the support they needed to raise their children allow me the honor of calling their children mine? I believe wholeheartedly in the redemption of adoption. But I believe even more in the gospel (good news) of orphan prevention.

A Noonday Ambassador's Journey

Since our adoption, every Mother’s Day I think of many mothers: my own, my husband’s, and now my children’s first mothers. I think, too, of all the mothers around the world who would give anything to have the chance to raise their children. Strong and capable women who only need access to things we take for granted – health care, education, and dignified work – to change the course of their lives and their children’s lives.

As I think about these brave women, Olivia’s face floats in my mind. Olivia is a momma in Uganda who once felt she had no other choice but to leave her daughter Rachel at an orphanage. She had no source of income and no way to care for the daughter she loved so much. But because she found work as an Artisan with Noonday’s Partner Business, she was able to keep her family together – and today she and Rachel are thriving! {Read Rachel & Olivia’s Story}

This is why I am a Noonday Ambassador. If I can use my connections, my voice, and my access to a global community to create a marketplace for precious women who just want to earn a fair wage and take care of their children, then by all means I will do it. And if that means I get brave and ask you to host a Trunk Show, or to use your purchasing power for good by shopping Noonday, or to even consider becoming an Ambassador yourself, then I will do that, too.  Because this Mother’s Day, and every Mother’s Day, I believe that mothers should be able to raise their babies in homes that are safe and loving and theirs.

Together we are building a flourishing world where children are cherished. Won’t you join us?
